The Order of Dagonet #1

The Order of Dagonet, is a series from Jeremy Whitley and Jason Strutz, published by Firetower Studios that revolves around the mythical group of the same name, which according to an included faux wiki are,

“An order of knights within the British Commonwealth Realms Founded by King Edward VIII during his short 325-day reign as king, the order was created to honor outstanding achievements in fields related to entertainment. Inductees represent such diverse professions as: athletes, actors, musicians, authors, Formula 1 drivers, puppeteers, film directors, and millionaire CEOs.”

The wiki goes on to explain that,

“Though the Order of Dagonet is largely considered a joke to those officially knighted into other orders, these men and women possess the same rights and responsibilities to the British Empire, including an obligation to protect the monarch and the homeland in times of great need. In the years that the Order of Dagonet has been in existence, there has never been a need to recall the knights.”

That is all about to change as a crew of workers clears an ancient forest in order to make room for a statue paying tribute to football legend David Beckham, during their ransacking of the ageless forest they remove an extra large tree accidently unleashing Titania “Queen of Faerie” and her army of creatures that are angry that tree has been uprooted, shortly afterwards Titania and her army start to destroy all those they come into contact with. Meanwhile a group of celebrities are being brought together to fight her forces as the new faces of the infamous Order of Dagonet.

This first issues introduces us to the first three members to be inducted into the order starting with a heavy metal superstar named Dizzy, clearly inspired by the real life Ozzy Osborne, next we have Gene Everyman, a famous author who is known for his book series of books about a boy wizard, and finally an aging actor by the name of Sir Tottington as they are summoned by Merlin and explained they are part of a larger group of individuals who have been brought together to protect England from the  escalating Faerie invasion.

Once again, Jeremy Whitley has another hit on his hands and showcases his writing chops by creating another truly interesting indie comic series. For starters, I loved the inclusion of the faux wiki explaining the origins of The Order of Dagonet, in my opinion this opened the door to use the first issue for character introductions and to give readers a small glimpse into the overall plot of the main story arc without having to worry about spending a lot of time explaining the origins of the order itself.

Also, I really enjoyed how each of the members of the order are inspired by real life celebrities that are all easily identifiable giving the story a nice helping of pop culture references for readers to spot. When it comes to believable and naturally sounding and flowing conversations Jeremy Whitley always seems to excel, this is one of the biggest factors that turned me into such a big fan of his work. Not only does this series feature spectacular writing but it also displays some breath taking artwork, each panel explodes to life with a large array of vivid colors, while paying close attention to minor details that really make each panel pop visually and add an extra level of realism.

I recommend trying this series and if you would like to pick up the first issue, it can currently be found inside the Official Firetower Studios Shop both in psychical form and digitally.
